A Truthful Boy
The Value of the day
is truthfulness.
What do you mean by
truth?
Truth means never
telling a lie.
We all know the story
of a shepherd boy who cried wolf. The boy decided to have some fun at the expense
of the villagers. He shouted, “Help, help, the wolf is here!” The villagers
heard and came to his rescue. But when they got there, they saw no wolf and the
boy laughed at them. They went away.
The next day, the boy
played the same trick and the same thing happened. Then one day, while the boy
was taking care of his sheep he actually saw a wolf and shouted for help. The
people in the village heard him but this time nobody came to his rescue. They
thought it was another trick and did not trust him anymore. He lost all his
sheep to the wolf.
When you tell a lie,
you lose credibility. Once credibility is lost, even when you tell the truth,
no one believes you. Actually, the power of choosing good and evil is within
the rich of all. Make the right choice. Truthfulness has its own reward.
Story
A hundred years ago,
there lived a woman in Arabia. She had a son. Her son was very honest and
promising from early childhood. His
mother used to tell him the stories of great men of high character. She laid
stress on truthfulness. She wanted her son to perform his duties with
truthfulness. In those days Baghdad was the seat of learning. People from far
and near used to Baghdad to take
education. She wanted him to take education in Baghdad.
But in those days
there were no means of transport as we have today. There were neither good
roads nor vehicles to go from one place to another. People lived in terror of
robbers and thieves while traveling. So people traveled in groups called
‘caravans’ for fear of robbers.
A caravan of traders
was about to set out on a journey to Baghdad. The woman decided to send her son
to Baghdad along with this caravan. The woman was very poor. She, somehow, was
able to manage forty gold coins for her son. She hid a gold coin in the inner
fold of the gown of her son.
She instructed her
son never to tell a lie and always follow the path of truthfulness.
The caravan set out
on its journey to Baghdad. In a deserted place, a gang of robbers attacked the
caravan. The robbers began to beat and rob the people of their valuables. The
people were crying.
Among the shrieks and
screams, the child stood gazing at what was happening. In the meantime, the robber
came to the child and asked, “What do you have?” The child answered calmly and
fearlessly, “I have forty gold coins.” The robber was wonderstruck to hear the
child. The robber took the child to his chief and spoke, “This boy says that he
has forty gold coins. Scolding the boy the chief of the robbers asked the
child, “Where are the gold coins?” the child again spoke fearlessly, “The gold
coins are hidden in the inner fold of my gown.” The chief said, “Show us, Where
are the gold coins.” The child tore off his gown and gave the gold coins to the
chief of the robbers. The chief was surprised. He asked the boy, “Your gold
coins were hidden in a way that we could not have braced them out. Then, why
did you let us know about them?” The child spoke gently, “My mother had advised
me never to tell a lie. These are the gold coins only. I will not tell a lie
even if there is a danger to my life.” The chief of the robbers was very much
impressed by the child. He called his fellow robbers and said, “A small child
obeys his mother so strictly and speaks the truths” We in spite of being
mature, do not follow the path shown by God and commit robbery and trouble to
the human beings.” The chief ordered the fellow robbers to return the booty to
the people. They vowed not to commit robbery and evil deeds in the future. The
people of the caravan were very happy to get their valuables back. They thanked
the child.
Dear child, The name of this child was Abdul Qadir. This child grew up to be a respected and God-fearing person. Dear children, a little child did not tell a lie even in a time of crisis. So, we should always speak the truth and follow the path of truthfulness.
