The Wonderful World

Value Respect for the Environment

·         Begin with a minute’s silence and daily payers.

·         The Value for the day is Respect for the Environment.

Think and Talk

Our country has a tradition of respecting and caring for nature. We study nature and learn many useful things from the environment. We should not forget the things we have learned but learn to use them in our lives today. Indian Medicines use plants in many ways. We need to use this knowledge in modern medicine. To do this, we must protect plants and study their properties. We must not cut down plants. We should care for our environment and plant trees.

Jack lives in a flat. There is not much room in the flat. There is not much space to do anything. However, Jack wants to grow some plants. He knows that there are some plants that can be grown indoors. He goes to the Library and finds some books on indoor plants. He learns about the various kinds of plants and the care required for each type of plant.

He talks to his parents and asks them if he can grow some plants. They tell him that he can do so if he takes care of them.

One evening Ankit was feeling very stuffy in his bedroom, so he opened the bedroom window.

He saw that some people were cutting a very big tree outside his house. It appeared that they wanted to sell the wood. He ran to inform his father about the woodcutters. But, He was very disappointed to know that they had already run away by the time his father reached there.

His father felt very sorry. He told Ankit, “If people do not stop felling trees do you know what will happen?” Ankit said, “No”, Then Ankit’s father explained the importance of trees. He said, “Ankit, trees are very important to us. They give us life-giving oxygen to breathe. Trees absorb the poisonous carbon dioxide gas that we and factories release. They give green cover to the earth. They bring rain for us. We get food in the form of fruits, vegetables, and grain from the plants. Animals also get food in the form of grass and leaves. Several things like paper and useful medicines are made from plants. They provide a home to numerous birds and animals, etc. They bring joy to mankind. If all the trees are cut man would not be able to live.”

There are talks on the radio and television about the need to preserve the trees and save the environment. Yet people cut trees for the sake of earning money. Today we find tall cement buildings everywhere, all factory chimneys giving out smoke and roads also are crowded. If all the trees are cut at this rate, there would be a lot of pollution and it would result in global warming.  Imagine how would people live in such an environment.”

Ankit asked his father, “” How should we stop people from felling trees? What should we do to educate them? “Father advised Ankit, “We must also tell people about the importance of trees. Deforestation has been one of the major causes of the depletion of wildlife. With the increase in the human population, forests were cleared or encroached upon for agriculture operations, human habitation, and for grazing livestock.

Rapid industrial growth and fast human progress have an evil direct on the exploitation of natural resources, such as wood for paper making, gums and resigns, mining of land for mineral ores and building materials, etc. If we have forests we will have a happy future. If each one of us plants one tree we will be able to help in protecting the environment left with us. Trees beautify the earth. “ Ankit said, “Father, on my birthday I will also plant a tree tell my friends to do the same so that we can have many trees.”

The father was very happy to hear this from his son. He said, “Ankit, it is a very good idea. I hope you will also ask your friends to plant trees and take care of them. If you ask your friends to ask to plant trees soon the message of loving trees can spread. But you will also have to water them and protect them or else they will die.” Ankit promised to do what he was told to do.

On Ankit’s birth father and mother helped Ankit plant a tree and they helped put some bricks to protect the tree to save it from cows and goats.

Ankit was very happy to water the young sapling planted by him. He showed his friends his newly discovered friend and inspired them to plant trees on their birthdays.

In this way, these children promised to protect the green cover of, “The Wonderful World.”
